My name is Michelle Dinwiddie and I have been a dog breeder for 6 years. I breed AKC, UKCI, CKC, and
APRI Purebred Poodles and AKC Cocker Spaniels . I also breed ACHC , UKCI, and CKC Hybrid Mixes
like the Cockapoo, Pekapoo, Maltipoo, and Doxiepoo. I am a former vet technician with a passion for all animals.
My husband and I have five great children and we live on five acres in Southwest, Virginia near the West Virginia stateline.
We raise hens for the eggs, and we garden .
We are available throughout most of the day and in the evening to answer your questions.
We feed only the best foods to our puppies for optimal health because we guarantee our puppies
health for two years and we want to make sure they have the best start in life.
We feed the adults only the best foods and supplements because they produce healthy offspring and
they're body weight and coats recover from labor faster.
I pride myself on being open and honest with all of my customers. I spend almost every moment
of my day working with the dogs and caring for the puppies. My whole family is involved in socializing them as well.
In my years of breeding I have read all sorts of wild methods of feeding puppies, rumors, and misinformation
for consumers looking for a puppy, most of it put out by breeders who are on a campaign to charge you as much as possible.
I have visited some websites that advise to give your new puppy McDonalds Hamburgers (in small pieces only)?????Some
advise to buy a pen and hang rattles and mirrors from the top of the pen.
I strongly advise against it.
I have read that some breeders accuse others of being puppy mills if they charge less than 1000.00 per puppy...(most
of the puppies they sell are 1500.00 on average) .
I myself am trying to provide a healthy puppy to individuals and families without breaking the budget and unlike
some of these same breeders I have a longer health guarantee than most at about half the cost. Most of my customers
are referals from former customers and so there is no need to bad mouth other breeders but there is a need to address some
of the misinformation put out by them and others.
Some breeders come up with outlandish reasons for not letting you come to their homes and opt to meet you somewhere...
I personally don't care if you come to my home at the time of pick-up but sometimes I meet people to save
them an extra 2 - 3 hours drivetime. I have video cameras installed with audio in case of theft or accident. I
try to make people as comfortable as possible during their visit and give them time to play with the puppy and ask questions.
Some breeders try to incorporate everything but the kitchen sink into the sale of a puppy...blankets, vitamins, crate,
excercise pens, bowls, collars, leashes, brushes, tooth brushes, clothing, flea treatment, etc...
I have found that most customers would rather enjoy the experience of buying these things for their puppies on there
own and many can save alot of money doing it rather than pay huge breeder mark-ups on products they buy wholesale through
places like www.jefferspet.com and www.petedge.com . I have tried to promote these items in the past but only charged 1.00-2.00 over cost per item and now sometimes incorporate
them into my "puppy pack" for free.
Some breeders accuse others of being puppy mills because they breed more than one or two breeds-
I breed about 7 different breeds and I'm not ashamed to say it. With the combination of purebred dogs
I have it allows me to do this. I primarily market to people who have allergies or who want a dog that doesn't shed.
I think it helps to have dogs of different breeds and temperaments to ensure they learn to adapt and co-exist with each other
and other animals. It's really fun to watch peoples reactions when they see a Beagle or a Puggle playing with a rabbit
or a cat.
There are many books and magazines out there (I own or subscribe to most of them) about puppies. Some are backed
by the AKC , AKC breeders, or Rescue organizations and lean heavily towards purebreeds or rescues but books on hybrids are
slowly emerging and finally the bias will be removed from public influence. It is a fact that all dogs are a product
of the dreaded word "Mixed Breed". It's also a fact that hybrids have better temperaments than most purebreeds. It is
a sad fact that most of the dogs in shelters have irreversible behavior problems due to neglect and abuse from previous owners.
I am happy knowing that I am able to provide families with puppies that are free of the temperament and genetic
problems often associated with purebreed dogs. I selectively breed my dogs so that the puppies are friendly with children
and are easily handled by their new owners. This doesn't mean that they won't need training though. All puppies
need training early in potty skills and in behavior and obedience as well as constant and consistent supervision.
Many of our customers have had much success with their puppies through Petsmart Training Classes. We now have a Petsmart
being built in Blacksburg that will be ready in the Fall. We have one in Roanoke but now we're thrilled that we will
have one only an hour away! We have plans to take all of our dogs for training classes and we love to take them to see Santa
around Christmas time. We also enjoy taking them with us to "shop". Our Puggle Kyleigh as well as our Pug Pugsley like
to choose their favorite toy and carry it around the store.
Its always fun to meet new people when they come to pick up a puppy and we would love to hear from them for
years to come.
